Yahweh-Rohi “The Lord My Shepherd” -3rd Kids Quest

What a fun night at our 3rd Kid’s Quest. I feel like I start each post out this same way, but we really do just have SO MUCH FUN!! I personally have fun preparing everything leading up to each Tuesday night, and then to see the kids so engaged in the story, answering questions, and having  fun with their friends is just so rewarding for EVERYONE!!!

Tonight we talked about God’s name : Yahweh-Rohi, [rohi is pronounced: "row"-like a boat) "he" (like a boy)] which means “The Lord My Shepherd.” We focused our study time on learning how a Shepherd cares for his sheep and why the sheep follow him and trust him. We saw that although sheep look the same to you and me, “a Shepherd knows everyone of his sheep and calls them by name. “ A shepherd carries his staff to rescue and protect his sheep, and a flute to comfort and calm them. The sheep know the shepherd by his voice. They will not follow anyone else.

“God wants us to understand that He tenderly loves and cares for His children. Each one is important to Him. So in the Bible He tells us they are like sheep, and He is like a shepherd to them. Just as a Shepherd protects and cares for his sheep, God protects and cares for His children.” Seeking the presence of our shepherd brings us into the care of our God.

We talked about David, who started out as a  shepherd before he became the 2nd king of the Israelites. We discovered that David wrote the 23rd Psalm as a song to God. He would sing songs about God while he was watching his sheep. We sang NEW verses of a song that we all knew well “the itsy bitsy spider”. Most of us never knew there were multiple verses to this children’s song. So by learning new verses we understood that songs we sing teach us things, just like Psalm 23 teaches us about God as Yahweh –Rohi, “The Lord our Shepherd.”

Psalm 23: 1-6-A psalm of David

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He takes me to lush pastures, he leads me to refreshing water.  He restores my strength.  He leads me down the right paths for the sake of his reputation. Even when I must walk through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff reassure me. You prepare a feast before me in plain sight of my enemies. You refresh my head with oil; my cup is completely full. Surely your goodness and faithfulness   will pursue me all my days, and I will live in the Lord’s house for the rest of my life [FOREVER].

Verses: Parents we need YOU to help your child(ren) learn their verses each week. These are truths that will stick in their minds the rest of their lives. They might not think about a verse they have learned for months, but one day you will be surprised what they remember.  If your child can’t recall every word, just help them come up with the main concept. Remember they get points for saying verses AND for knowing the reference!!

Tonight each child took home the following verses to memorize for our next Kids Quest in 2 weeks:

“I am the good shepherd.   The good shepherd lays down His life for his sheep…   I know my sheep and my sheep know me…”   John 10:11 & 14

Additional verses for extra points:

*Know Yahweh, He is Elohim; He made us and we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. (Psalm 100:3)

*Yahweh is my shepherd, I shall not want. (Psalm 23:1)

We look forward to seeing each of you in 2 weeks for our 4th Kids Quest of the summer for Dry AND Wet dodge-ball & more water fun…….so come ready to get wet AGAIN!!! Remember if you bring a friend you’ll get 10 extra points!!!!
